Let’s save the USPS!

Okay, maybe that’s a bit ambitious. But let’s try anyway!

I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling like there’s almost nothing I can control right now. Admittedly, this is how I often feel (thank you OCD) but in a pandemic? Well, we are all on a more level playing field, anxiety wise.

One of the things I’ve become really dependant on is the MAIL! I get so excited when it comes. We sing the song from Blue’s Clues- it really does make us wanna wail MAAAILLLL!!

But the Orange Menace is at it again. Did you know that the mail is a constitutional right? That it’s one of the things that, from the beginning, made American great (barf).

A simple way to help the USPS, that I’ve found, is buying and using postage. I have a bunch of stamps now! What can I do with them, I thought to myself.

Here’s YOUR part- I want to send mail to you!

You just need to fill out my google form with either your own address, or the address of someone you love. Include what you’d like on your 5×7 painting or piece of hand lettered art. Here’s the link:

When you do this, I will make a 5×7 painting, write a note on the opposite side, and put it into the mail. When will it get there? Soon! And I’ll ensure to the best of my ability that it’ll turn up in good condition.

That’s it! Of course, if you’d like to throw me a couple of bones for stamps, cards and envelopes, it’d be nice! But not expected or necessary. Venmo info is on the form.

I hope it helps to spread some joy, brighten your day, and hey, even help to save the USPS. You never know, man, it’s 2020. All bets are OFF!

Using Washable Markers as Watercolor

Hi!  I hear you want to use common materials to make art?  Well, you’ve come to the right place.  Here’s what you will need!

Materials:

  • Washable markers (Crayola or store brand, any size/color collection you like)
  • A surface to use as a palette
  • Paint brush
  • Watercolor paper
  • Containers to hold water
  • Towels for cleaning up
  • beverage of choice

optional

  • masking or washi tape (to hold down edges of paper)
  • pencil (for sketching)

Washable markers

The most important aspect of these markers is that they’re washable.  No Sharpies or other permanent markers would work for this.  Here are some that are easy to get at Target, Walmart or the grocery store!

Crayola Broad Line Washable Markers

Crayola Supertips

Crayola Pip Squeaks

Or the Generic Equivalent of any of these.

A surface to use as a palette

I suggest a white ceramic or smooth plate.  If you have a page protector, a piece of white paper in a page protector sleeve works really well, too.

Paint brush

Ideally you will have time to get some watercolor brushes.  Makeup brushes work in a pinch too.  I use Princeton Neptune and Silver Brush Black Velvet.

Watercolor paper

Canson XL, Strathmore or store brand, doesn’t matter.  Printer paper is really tricky and will probably make you frustrated, but cardstock can work!

Containers to hold water

I like glass so I can see when I need to change, but that’s my preference.

Towels for cleaning up

Paper or cloth, whatev, do you, baby

beverage of choice

self explanatory, right?

I am so excited to teach you how accessible watercolors can be!  See you Friday night 🙂

Hello and Welcome!

Hey what’s up?  I’m Lauren, the artist behind Badass Botanical Art.  Gonna give this blogging thing a go (again, I had one longgggg ago).  So, let’s get to know each other, ok?

My project is about combining some very lady-like arts, calligraphy and watercolor floral painting, and pairing them with empowering messages.  I love art, I love words, and I love the idea of lifting others up and giving a good example.

I also adore art history, and my day job as an adjunct instructor puts me on a stage to share what makes us all unique, and ultimately, what unites us.  Some people may question the importance of art history for most majors, but visual culture is so relevant today.

I plan to use this blog to support my Instagram feed, bulk up my tech skills (lol), and as an outlet for my wordier side.  I write others’ words in calligraphy, but these ones?  All mine.
